Have you ever noticed while out that there are some parents who pick up cuddle and soothe a crying child while other parents threaten them with spankings or ignore them completely? Which child do you think will have the more trusting, open relationship with their parent? The better the child parent relationship the better chance for the child to grow into a productive well rounded adult.
Parenting styles have everything to do with how a child turns out.

between authoritarian parents, overly permissive parents and authoritative parents..which one is the best????

Sonia answers:
Authoritative parenting is actually a happy balance between authoritarian and permissive. It takes the benefits of both methods and combines them. Usually happy balances work best when working with people (including children). I like the definition which breaks permissive down into indulgent or neglectful. As the definition of permissive is too broad otherwise.
Authoritative parenting style has resulted in children becoming more mature, having more self control, self discipline, being more successful and having more friends (you will find a lot of research that shows this). I think one of the main reasons for this is that the parents who practice authoritative methods are well balanced themselves. Authoritarian parenting can be practised through fear of loosing control due to a low self esteem. Authoritarian upbringings can sometimes lead to indulgent parenting styles being adopted when the children become parents themselves. In most cases there is usually an imbalance and/or insecurity at the heart of the actions. I don’t even need to go into neglectful parenting!!
To angelmom I think attachment parenting is a form of authoritative parenting because above all it is child centered. All the needs of the child are met, they are also being taught the social rules of wider society. They are not being left to do what they want and nor are they being forced to fit into the parents ideal structure. Attachment introduces the rules when the children have the mental compacity to understand them.

Where can I find information about dismissive (neglectful) parenting style?
I have a pyschology project due and I need to find substantial information about dismissive parenting style. All I can find so far is about three sentences worth of info all saying basically the same thing: Dismissive parents have low limits and low love. I need more substance. Things like pyschological effects (short and long term), examples, etc.
